Why Some Things Can't Just Be Hauled Away
Every reputable junk removal company in Oakland has a list of items it won't take, and it's not because we're being picky. Certain household products are legally classified as hazardous waste, which means they're dangerous to workers, dangerous to landfill sites, and dangerous to groundwater if they end up in the wrong place. They're regulated for good reason, illegal dumping carries real fines, and honestly? A hauler who will take that stuff is probably tipping it somewhere it shouldn't go.
Here's the full list of what junk removal and curbside pickup can't take in Oakland, exactly where each item goes instead, and what we absolutely can haul. For a quick answer on a single item, search our searchable list of what we take.
What Junk Removal and Curbside Pickup Can't Take
These are all household hazardous waste (HHW). They can't go in your trash cart, they can't go in your recycling cart, and a junk hauler can't put them in the truck:
- Paint and finishes: latex and oil paint, stains, solvents, thinners, strippers.
- Garden and pool chemicals: pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, pool chlorine and acid.
- Household cleaners: drain cleaner, oven cleaner, bleach in bulk, ammonia.
- Automotive fluids: motor oil, antifreeze, gasoline, brake fluid.
- Fuels and gas: propane tanks (any size), butane canisters.
- Lighting: fluorescent tubes and compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs.
- Mercury items: thermometers, thermostats.
- Batteries: household alkaline, rechargeables, lithium-ion, car batteries.
Where It All Goes: The Oakland HHW Facility
Every one of the items above is accepted free of charge at the Oakland Household Hazardous Waste facility at 2100 East 7th Street. It's a drop-off site for Alameda County residents, and it's the correct destination for essentially anything on the hazardous list.
Before you load up the car:
- Check current hours and the accepted-item list at StopWaste.org/hhw or by calling 1-800-606-6606. Hours and accepted items change from time to time.
- Bring proof of Alameda County residency (a driver's license usually works).
- Keep items in their original containers when possible, and don't mix chemicals.
- Transport upright in the trunk, not the passenger area.
E-Waste: Also Not Curbside
We can collect the old electronics and arrange certified processing, but loose paint, chemicals, and batteries stay off the truck. See appliance and e-waste disposal guide for details.
Appliances With Freon: Special Handling
TVs are covered e-waste rather than excluded household hazardous waste. We remove the screen and take it for certified processing, separate from the paint and chemicals. See Oakland old TV disposal guide for details.
Refrigerators, freezers, window AC units, and dehumidifiers contain refrigerants (freon and related gases) that must be recovered by a certified technician before the appliance can be recycled. You can't legally cut the lines and haul it to the scrap yard yourself, and no good hauler will just chuck it in the truck. What a professional junk removal service does is arrange for the refrigerant to be handled correctly and then recycle the metal shell. If it's a fridge or AC, see our Oakland appliance removal service.
What We Can Legally Haul
The good news is that "hazardous" is a much shorter list than most people think. A junk removal crew can take almost everything else in your home or garage, including:
- Furniture, couches, mattresses, dressers, tables, chairs.
- Appliances, including refrigerators, freezers, and AC units (with the refrigerant handled correctly).
- Electronics for recycling, TVs, computers, monitors, printers.
- Yard waste and green debris.
- General household junk, boxes, and clutter.
- Construction debris, drywall, flooring, cabinetry, small demo loads.
For items we can take, the truck-space tiers start at $150 for one item, about $250 for a partial load, and $500 or more for a full truck. We quote the removal before lifting and keep excluded hazardous products separate from that load. See pricing page, Oakland bulky pickup & disposal guide for details.
The Honest Bottom Line
If a hauler tells you they'll take your paint cans and propane tanks, call someone else. A reputable Oakland junk removal service will always tell you exactly what it can and can't take, and point you to the free HHW drop-off for the rest. That's how you keep hazardous stuff out of the landfill and out of the estuary.
