Why Appliances and Electronics Need Their Own Rules
Appliances and electronics are tightly regulated: refrigerant needs certified recovery, TVs require e-waste recycling, and loose household batteries are excluded hazardous waste. We remove the old appliances and arrange the right recycling for each one, with single-item pickups starting at $150. Paint, chemicals, and loose batteries stay out of our truck.
Appliances with Freon: The One Rule You Can't Skip
Refrigerators, freezers, window and portable AC units, and dehumidifiers all contain refrigerant (commonly called freon). Under federal law, that refrigerant has to be recovered by an EPA Section 608–certified technician before the appliance is scrapped. Releasing it into the air is illegal, and most transfer stations and recyclers won't accept the unit at all until the refrigerant has been evacuated and the appliance is tagged as certified.
That's why you can't just drag a fridge to the curb, and it's why a lot of "free" removal offers on Craigslist quietly turn into illegal dumps in East Oakland a few days later. Handling it correctly requires either a licensed technician or a hauler who works with one.
Where Appliances Can Actually Go
Oakland's free bulky curbside pickup
Oakland's bulky collection accepts eligible appliances but is curbside only, appointment-based, and limited in volume. It does not disconnect or carry a heavy appliance out of your kitchen. We move the appliance out of the kitchen and arrange its recycling, including certified refrigerant recovery where required; ask about today's or tomorrow's openings. See Oakland bulky pickup guide for details.
Certified appliance recyclers
Appliances need certified recycling, with refrigerant recovered by an EPA Section 608 certified technician before a fridge or AC unit is scrapped. We take the units to the appropriate recyclers and arrange that recovery as part of the job. Our appliance removal service covers washers, dryers, dishwashers, stoves, and microwaves, while our refrigerator disposal service covers refrigerant appliances.
E-Waste: TVs, Monitors, and Electronics
California keeps TVs, monitors, computers, and other e-waste out of curbside carts because they need controlled recycling. We can collect the dead printer, old monitor, and unwanted appliances together and separate their recycling streams after loading. These handling routes matter:
- Certified recycling. The TVs and monitors we collect go to certified e-waste processors, not the household trash stream.
- City collection limits. Curbside-only collection is capped and appointment-based. Our crew handles the indoor carry-out and hauling on your timeline.
- A junk removal service that routes e-waste to certified recyclers, details on our Oakland e-waste disposal page.
Batteries, Bulbs, and Other Hazardous Bits
Loose household batteries, fluorescent bulbs, paint, and chemicals cannot go in our truck, trash carts, or ordinary recycling. Alameda County residents can take these excluded hazardous items to the HHW facility at 2100 East 7th Street or call 1-800-606-6606 for guidance. Resident drop-off is free. Keep them separate while our crew hauls appliances and electronics.
When Removal Is Worth It
Have an old screen in the pile? Our guide to TV disposal in Oakland covers the legal recycling options before you book a pickup.
You don't need to stage the washer at the curb or find a separate refrigerant technician. We cover the removal and recycling when:
- You need it gone today or before a move-out deadline.
- The appliance is upstairs, in a basement, or through a tight door.
- It's a freon unit and you don't want to arrange a certified tech separately.
- You've got a mixed load, an old fridge, a dead TV, and a broken microwave, and want it handled in one stop.
Appliance removal in Oakland typically runs $150–$250 depending on the item and access, with single-item pickups starting at $150. That includes the labor, safe refrigerant handling where needed, and recycling. See our pricing page for the full breakdown.
