Oakland's Illegal-Dumping Problem — and Why the Legal Options Matter
Mattresses, couches, and appliances dumped around Oakland create blight, code complaints, and cleanup costs. Legal disposal matters, but city programs cannot carry items out of homes or clear every load. We remove those bulky items from the property and take them to lawful donation, recycling, or disposal destinations.
Option 1: Oakland's Free Bulky-Item Pickup Program
Oakland's bulky-item program runs through Oakland Recycles with the city and waste providers. It is tied to garbage service, limited to eligible materials and scheduled curbside collection, and does not provide indoor carry-out. Our truck visit includes getting the furniture out of the house, not just collecting it at the curb.
How to schedule
The program is appointment-based, with waits that can stretch weeks around month-end and moving season. It cannot meet every move-out deadline or provide same-day indoor removal. Hire our crew for same-day or next-day hauling, priced upfront from $150 with a free quote.
What it covers
The program caps each appointment at about 4 cubic yards with limited allowances for additional eligible items. Larger garage, estate, and apartment loads can exceed that cap. Our crew quotes the full load upfront and carries it out for you. Eligible categories include:
- Mattresses and box springs
- Large appliances (washers, dryers, dishwashers, ranges)
- TVs, computer monitors, and other electronics
- Tires
- Carpet and rugs
The catches
The service is curbside only, capped at about 4 cubic yards, and not same-day. City crews do not come into garages, backyards, or upstairs apartments. We handle the indoor lifting and stairs, and can quote a larger load without the city's 4-cubic-yard cap.
Even a single couch can be a problem when it is upstairs or the next city appointment is weeks away. A couch pickup starts at $150 and includes getting it down the stairs and onto the truck, with reuse or recycling considered afterward. See full free junk removal guide for details.
Option 2: Self-Haul to the Davis Street Transfer Station
Davis Street Transfer Station in San Leandro processes general waste and mixed debris, but transport, loading, unloading, and facility restrictions remain separate responsibilities for a self-haul. We make the transfer-station run after loading the unwanted items, so you don't have to arrange a truck and unload twice.
Truck rental, fuel, disposal fees, loading, and unloading add time and effort to a self-haul. We give you one removal price for the lift, truck, and disposal, rather than leaving you to add up those separate costs.
Option 3: Special Materials — Mattresses, Hazardous Waste, and E-Waste
Mattresses, electronics, and refrigerant appliances have regulated recycling requirements. Paint, chemicals, and other excluded household hazardous waste need their own facility. We separate the haulable load according to those rules and arrange its donation, recycling, or disposal destinations.
Mattresses and box springs
The Bye Bye Mattress program recovers usable mattress materials, but wet, infested, and certain specialty mattresses are excluded from recycling. We remove the old mattress from the bedroom, check it for recovery acceptance, and arrange appropriate disposal if it is excluded. See mattress disposal in Oakland for details.
Household hazardous waste (HHW)
Paint, solvents, pesticides, propane tanks, motor oil, and household batteries cannot go in our truck or curbside trash. Alameda County residents can take these excluded hazardous items to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 2100 East 7th Street; guidance is available at StopWaste.org/hhw or 1-800-606-6606. Drop-off is free for residents. Refrigerant appliances are different: we arrange certified recovery before their components are recycled. See appliance removal service for details.
E-waste
TVs, monitors, laptops, and other electronics cannot go in curbside carts under California recycling rules. City collection has volume and scheduling limits. We can collect the electronics with your bulky items and separate them for certified e-waste processing. See Oakland e-waste disposal for details.
Option 4: Hiring a Junk Removal Service (When It's Worth It)
We cover the indoor lifting and the load's next destination, which curbside collection doesn't. A truck visit helps when:
- You need it gone today or tomorrow. Same-day pickup, no waiting for a city appointment.
- Items are inside, heavy, or upstairs. A crew handles the lifting, the stairs, and the doorways.
- You have more than the free 4 cu yd cap. Garage, estate, hoarder, or foreclosure cleanouts almost always exceed it.
- You're on a deadline. Realtor showings, move-outs, turnover between tenants, and closing dates don't flex.
- You just don't want to do the labor. That's a valid reason on its own.
What it costs
Our pricing is transparent and volume-based, quoted on-site before we start:
- Single item pickup, $150+ (a couch, a fridge, a mattress).
- Partial load, about $250 (a room's worth of furniture or a small garage clear-out).
- Full truck load, $500+ (a garage, a full estate room, or a big cleanout).

Serving Every Oakland Neighborhood
We handle junk pickups in every Oakland neighborhood, Rockridge, Temescal, Fruitvale, Montclair, Lake Merritt, Jack London Square, Downtown, and up into the Oakland Hills, and we know the local quirks, like narrow streets, permit-parking blocks, and walk-up apartments, that the free city program leaves you to navigate yourself.
A Real-World Example
A couch in a Temescal apartment can miss a move-out deadline when the next city appointment is over a week away. Our single-couch price starts at $150, including the stair carry, and we can discuss an earlier collection slot.
Which Option Is Right for You?
Match the material to the handling it needs; we'll take care of the items we can haul:
- Furniture inside or upstairs? Leave it in place; we'll plan the carry, with single-piece collections starting at $150.
- Mattress or box spring? We get it out of the bedroom and check its acceptance for mattress recovery.
- Paint, chemicals, or propane? These excluded items go to the household hazardous waste facility at 2100 East 7th Street; call 1-800-606-6606 for guidance. Refrigerators and AC units are handled separately on our jobs, with certified refrigerant recovery arranged before recycling.
- A garage, an estate, a hoarder unit, a foreclosure, or anything you need gone today? Skip the wait and call a hauler. That's what we're built for.
Never dump unwanted items on a curb. We can collect the bulky load from your property and arrange legal disposal, with a free estimate before the job. Call (510) 616-3261 for a free quote, or read homepage for details.
