Why the Garage Is Everyone's Least Favorite Room
The Oakland garage is where good intentions go to pile up. Old paint from the last kitchen refresh, a broken exercise bike, tires from a car you don't own anymore, a rolled-up rug, three boxes of "sort later", and somewhere in there, allegedly, room for a car. The reason garage cleanouts feel so overwhelming isn't the volume, it's the mix: some of it can go in the trash, some of it can't legally touch the trash, some of it should be donated, and some of it needs a special drop-off.
Choose what stays in the garage and flag excluded hazardous items; we'll clear the unwanted furniture and equipment in one visit and sort the load afterward. You can ask for a free estimate before booking. See check any item in our lookup for details.
The Step-by-Step Checklist
- Book the cleanout. Tell us how to reach the garage and whether you need it clear today or tomorrow; we'll check the available slots.
- Identify what stays. Mark belongings you are keeping; our crew carries the unwanted items out so you do not empty the garage yourself.
- Flag five categories. Keep, donate, recycle, haul away, and excluded hazardous waste. We handle donation sorting and recycling for the haulable items; hazardous products remain separate.
- Clear the space with our crew. We load the unwanted items and sweep after removal; any oil contamination needs appropriate separate handling.
- Put only the "keep" pile back, organized on shelves or hooks. Group by category so you can actually find things.
- Let us load the unwanted piles. We separate reusable items from recycling and waste after collection. Keep paint and chemicals out of the truck.
The Five-Pile Sort — What Goes Where in Oakland
Keep
Only items you've used in the last 12 months or expect to use in the next 12. Everything else is a candidate for one of the other piles.
Donate
Usable tools, bikes, furniture, and small appliances may qualify for charity reuse. We check the bikes and tools as we load and take qualifying pieces for donation, without leaving you to arrange another pickup.
Recycle
We separate cardboard, clean metal, and suitable wood for recycling where accepted, and take the garage's TVs and computers for certified e-waste processing. See appliance and e-waste disposal guide for details.
Haul away
We load the broken treadmill, worn rug, and unwanted garage furniture in one visit. City collection stays curbside only, capped, and often weeks out, so it won't handle that garage carry for you. See home gym equipment removal, Oakland bulky pickup guide for details.
Hazardous
This is the pile most people get wrong. See the next section, it has its own drop-off.
Garage Items That Need Special Disposal
A surprising amount of what lives in a garage is legally hazardous household waste, which means it can't go in your trash, your recycling, or a junk hauler's truck:
- Paint, stains, solvents, thinners. Even mostly-empty cans.
- Pesticides, herbicides, pool chemicals.
- Motor oil, antifreeze, gasoline, brake fluid.
- Propane tanks.
- Batteries and fluorescent bulbs.
- Loose hazardous products only. We collect tires separately for appropriate tire recycling, not household hazardous waste drop-off.
Paint, chemicals, automotive fluids, propane, loose batteries, and fluorescent bulbs go to the HHW facility at 2100 East 7th Street, not our truck. Resident hazardous-waste drop-off is free; confirm the current accepted-item list at StopWaste.org/hhw or 1-800-606-6606. We separately haul tires and ordinary garage junk through legal recycling and disposal routes.
Doing the Whole Thing in One Day (With a Hauler)
A DIY garage cleanout usually eats a Saturday and a Sunday, plus a couple of trips to the transfer station and one to the HHW facility. Hiring a hauler collapses that into a few hours. We show up, load everything in the "haul away" pile, take usable items to donation on the way, and drop e-waste and recyclables at the right facilities. You handle the sort; we handle the truck.
Cost is by volume: about $250 for a partial load, $500+ for a full truck. See the pricing page for the full breakdown, or visit our Oakland garage cleanout service page for what's included.
